As the effects of climate change become increasingly threatening every day, it’s essential that we make conscious purchasing decisions and take steps to reduce waste and recycle whenever possible. While home soda makers are a sustainable alternative to disposable soda cans, we can do even better by ensuring we know how to dispose of a SodaStream cylinder responsibly!

About SodaStream Cylinders

If you’re a SodaStream user or have purchased one recently, you might be wondering how to get rid of your empty SodaStream cylinders in an eco-friendly manner once they’re empty. In this guide, we walk you through the process of how to do it responsibly and lower the environmental footprint of our consumption habits!

Sodastream CO2 cylinder makes up to 60L of sparkling warter

SodaStream machines use CO2 cylinders to carbonate water. These cylinders come in various sizes, including 60-liter and 130-liter options to cater to different user needs. We will just be concentrating on the 60L home soda maker cylinders in this article. Once the cylinder is empty, it doesn’t need to be thrown away. SodaStream has an amazing mechanism in place to ensure these cylinders are reused, reducing waste and preserving resources.

The SodaStream Exchange Program

SodaStream encourages users to participate in their exchange program by returning empty cylinders. When your CO2 cylinders are empty, you can exchange them for full ones at any SodaStream retail location, or more conveniently, using the SodaStream Exchange Program.

By using the SodaStream exchange program, you’re not just ensuring you always have a supply of carbonating gas on hand but also contributing to a circular economy by enabling your empty cylinders to be reused.

How does the SodaStream Exchange Program work

The SodaStream cylinder exchange program is designed to be both convenient and environmentally friendly.

Here’s how it works!

  1. Order your SodaStream CO2 Cylinder Online

You can easily order the number of SodaStream cylinders you need through Amazon, but make sure you order the right cylinder for your particular machine. You can check our detailed guide on carbonators to determine the right type for your sparkling water maker. If you already know what cylinders you need, you can order them from Amazon here. Don’t throw away the box they come in, though!

  1. Send Back Your Empty Cylinders by Mail

Along with your new cylinders, you’ll receive a pre-paid return label under the original shipping label. Pack your empty cylinders in the original box that your new ones arrived in, peel off the shipping label to reveal the prepaid shipping label, and send them back to the SodaStream Gas Exchange Program. It ensures your old SodaStream cylinders can be cleaned, inspected, refilled, and reused. It’s really that simple!

  1. Otherwise, Use Retail Exchange

If you want to avoid the shipping cost or prefer to exchange your cylinders at a physical location, you can take them to an authorized SodaStream retailer. This includes stores like Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Walmart. Hand over your empty cylinders and receive full ones in exchange, paying only for the cost of the gas.

  1. Exchange Multiple Cylinders, If You Wish

You can exchange more than one cylinder at a time. If you have multiple SodaStream machines or like to have a backup cylinder on hand, this can be a convenient option.

Other Ways on How to Dispose of a SodaStream Cylinder

Recycling SodaStream cylinders is an eco-friendly way to manage your carbon footprint. Here are a couple more options, if for some crazy reason, (we cannot think of any) you no longer require your SodaStream cylinders or your SodaStream machine, then the following may be helpful!

  1. Hand Over Them at a Recycling Facility

If for some reason you cannot return or exchange your SodaStream cylinder, check with your local waste management facility. Some recycling facilities accept these cylinders. However, make sure to confirm with them first, as not all facilities have the capacity to handle such materials.

  1. Donate It

If the cylinders are still usable and your machine is still usable, consider donating them to someone who could use them or a local organization that accepts such items.

Final Thoughts

Disposing of your SodaStream CO2 cylinder using proper ways is not just about decluttering your home. It’s also about taking responsibility for the environment. By participating in the SodaStream Gas Exchange Program or responsibly recycling your unused cylinders, you’re making a positive impact on the planet. Remember, every small step towards sustainability counts!
